Guides at Montana Angler Fly Fishing are reporting ideal conditions for targeting large trout across the Big Sky state. "Montana fly fishing catches its second wind in late September and October when water temperatures cool down and some trout begin moving before the spawn." mentions outfitter Brian McGeehan. "The last few weeks have been pretty exciting for some of the anglers that our guides have been out with and we are seeing a lot of trout over 20" coming in on a pretty regular basis."

According to McGeehan there are several reasons why the conditions for big trout in the fall have been nearly perfect this year. "Every year the lower elevation rivers in our region become too warm for good fishing in the busy summer months so anglers ignore them and head to the famous blue ribbon waters like the Upper Madison, Gallatin and Yellowstone Rivers. When water temperatures begin dropping in September the lower elevation rivers become productive again resulting in ideal water temperatures on fisheries that haven't had much fishing pressure in months. Big trout get smart if they see a lot of flies so when some of these rivers start producing again in the fall we see a lot of big fish since they aren't very educated.

"Brown trout also begin to migrate before the spawning season in late November" states McGeehan. "There are some really big brown trout that live in some of the large reservoirs on the Madison and Missouri river systems. We are just starting to see some of these big browns moving out of the lakes and into the rivers. These fall runs of brown trout peak in late October and early November. There are also some smaller creeks and rivers that see runs of browns that come out of larger rivers like the Yellowstone and Missouri."
