Community college enrollment dip sparks concerns

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Slowing enrollment at community colleges across the nation is sparking worries that efforts to increase the number of adults with college degrees will falter.

Enrollment at Ivy Tech Community College is down 5 percent from last year. The Indianapolis Business Journal reports many community colleges nationwide are seeing enrollment declines of 3 percent to 5 percent.

Experts say soaring tuition costs are largely to blame for the drop.

Nearly every public college in Indiana has seen tuition and fees more than double since 2000. Ivy Tech's tuition and fees are up 74 percent since 2000.

Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers says the tuition increases aren't sustainable in an age in which many students base their college choices on cost.
