A woman died in a house fire on the west side Friday evening.

Firefighters say the woman died in a fire at a home in the 1200 block of Kappes Street, near West Morris and South Belmont around 6 p.m. Friday.

A neighbor tells Eyewitness News he heard an explosion coming from the kitchen area of the residence just before the fire. Emergency crews called to the scene were told someone might be trapped inside.

Firefighters say there was no one else in the home at the time and believe the fire may have started accidentally. Police have not yet determined a cause of the fire.
