INDIANAPOLIS -
Tens of thousands of people will be converging on downtown Indianapolis this weekend. Circle City Classic activities get underway Friday afternoon, and will include the annual parade and football game.
If you are coming downtown this weekend, expect to see the bleachers already in place along Pennsylvania for Saturday's parade. This will be prime viewing real estate for the parade.
If you're coming for the parade, or anything else downtown, be aware of several street closures.
The parade runs from 10 a.m. until noon and will shut down Pennsylvania from Vermont to Ohio, Ohio over to Meridian and Meridian up to North Street.
The highlight of the Classic weekend is the football game, which matches two historically black colleges or universities and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships for students attending those schools.@ It also has a big impact on the downtown area. generating more than $4-million, mainly from visitors from out of town.
"That ranks Circle City Classic in our top 40 most lucrative events that Indianapolis will host in 2012," said Chris Gahl of the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association. "So, very exciting weekend, and one that brings in, we're anticipating, anywhere from 60-to-80-thousand visitors to soak in the Circle City."
The Circle City Classic wraps up on Sunday, when there's also a Colts home game.
