INDIANAPOLIS -

A mother and one-year-old child were slightly injured in a house fire on the Indianapolis north side Tuesday afternoon.

Crews with the Indianapolis Fire Department were called to the 3900 block of Boulevard Place shortly before 1:00 pm. Firefighters saw heavy fire showing when they arrived at the scene. They entered through the back door and had the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

Capt. Rita Reith with IFD told Eyewitness News that the children were already out of the home when firefighters arrived. The woman and her one-year-old child were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Her four-year-old was not injured.

The mother told firefighters that her four-year-old son is fascinated by lighters and fire, and she believes that he was playing with a lighter. Neighbors helped retrieve the one-year-old from the home. The mother made it out of the home with the four-year-old. Initially firefighters thought the one-year-old boy was still inside the home when they arrived, but everyone was located safely. The family dog was also given some oxygen.

Firefighters estimate that the house is a total loss, with damage at $75,000.

The IFD Fire Stop office offers age appropriate counseling to educate young children about the danger of fire. See more info here on IFD's programs.
