New Albany seeks to tighten pain clinic rules

Posted: Updated:
NEW ALBANY -

A southern Indiana city is seeking to restrict where pain management clinics can locate.

The New Albany City Council is considering a revised zoning ordinance that would bar pain clinics from opening less than 500 feet from a residentially zoned district and 1,000 feet from other pain clinics.

Residents in the neighboring Ohio River city of Jeffersonville protested in August when a pain clinic opened there amid concerns it would bring prescription medication fraud.

New Albany councilman Scott Blair tells the News and Tribune he's sponsoring the changes primarily because of concerns about the parking and traffic troubles the clinics can cause.

But he says the clinics are moving into southern Indiana now that Kentucky officials have cracked down on pain clinics there.
