University of Notre Dame theology professor, the Rev. Brian Daley, has been named one of recipients of the 2012 Ratzinger Prize in Theology from Pope Benedict XVI.

Established two years ago, the Ratzinger Prize is sponsored by The Joseph Ratzinger Vatican Foundation, named after the pope. The purpose of the award is to recognize distinguished scholarship in scripture, the early leaders of the Christian church and fundamental theology.

In making the announcement, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, president of the Ratzinger Foundation's academic committee, praised Daley as a great historian, but also a man committed to the life and mission of the church.

Daley is a Jesuit priest who has been a member of the Notre Dame faculty since 1996. His teaching and research concerns such first- through eighth-century Christian thinkers.
