Porter County Sheriff Dave Lain is using a National Institute of Corrections assessment to bolster his case for hiring more jail guards.
Lain says he'll ask the Porter County Council next month to consider appropriating the $933,000 needed to hire 16 additional guards.
The Times of Munster reported Sunday that's the number of additional guards needed to open a third pod at the jail and provide a greater safety for all employees at the facility.
Before the third pod can be opened, the county also must pay for $100,000 to $120,000 for repairs to that part of the jail. Inadequate staffing has prevented the pod from being used since the jail opened 10 years ago, but the Institute of Corrections recently concluded the jail is crowded and understaffed.
