Hundreds of people in Hamilton County saw a unique race Saturday that sped right through the streets of downtown Westfield.

It was downhill derby race for the Fourth annual Grand Junction Funktion. The annual event drew a big crowd that lined Union Street in downtown Westfield to watch participants outrun each other down the normally quiet street.

"It's really a fun and unique way to get people to come to downtown Westfield and see what we have to offer," said Tony Graf, a Westfield native who's two children participated in the race.

Racers start on a makeshift ramp, then travel 200-yards before being pushed by up to two teammates another 50-yards to the finish line.

More than 20 cars competed and participants ranged from local businesses and city leaders to high school students and community members. Some of the creative car designs varied from a tank and converted trash can to a mini pontoon boat and wooden house.

"It's been great, it seems like more and more people show up to the event, people keep saying I want to do that next year," said Chad Huff, chair of the Grand Junction Funktion. "And most people keep their word once somebody comes out and sees the race it's a really good time and they want to be a part of it."

The event was started by local business people who wanted a fun way to promote businesses and the community in Westfield.

"I think that the community response we've gotten off of this event has been great and its been rewarding being apart of an event that keeps growing and growing," said Huff.
