Ground broken for local Mormon Temple

Posted: Updated:
CARMEL -

Carmel will soon be home to a new Mormon Temple.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints broke ground Saturday at the southwest corner of 116th and Spring Mill.

There are only 140 temples worldwide.

Mormons consider them more holy than the regular meeting-houses where they gather to worship on Sundays.

Chicago and Louisville were the closest Temples until now.

Gregory Schwitzer, Mormon Elder explained, "Members of the church used to have to travel all the way to Salt Lake City at one time many, many years ago to participate in a temple worship service but we're trying to put the temples closer to where the membership resides."
