Indiana Ice falls 3-2 in season opener - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

The Indiana Ice struck pay dirt first on Friday, but surrendered three unanswered goals to fall in the 2012-2013 regular season opener 3-2 against the Chicago Steel at the Edge Ice Arena.

Bo Pieper was the first to etch his name into the goal category this season for the Ice with a lamp lighter against his former team in the first period. Tyler Pham added the second goal late in the third while Dalton Izyk blocked 27 of 30 shots in net.

Indy put up a 12-10 shot advantage in the opening frame with Izyk besting all ten bullets in net. The Ice battled the Steel goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos and the goal posts until midway through the period when Pieper logged the first goal of the season off a feed from Joe Fiala and Woody Hudson.

Both teams battled with puck possession in the second period. Indy gave up two goals off the sticks of Danny Fetzer and Tim Davidson to head into the second intermission trailing 2-1, despite several holes and odd-man rushes against Chicago's blueline.

Limited shots in the third period added to the Ice's woes, despite a power play goal by Pham to cut the deficit in half to 3-2 with just over nine minutes left in the contest. Drew Smolcynski and Robbie Baillargeon earned helper's credit on the play.

The Indiana Ice open the Pan Am Plaza portion of their home schedule on Saturday, October 29 against the visiting Omaha Lancers at 7:05 pm.
