INDIANAPOLIS -
There is a new warning for families about an Internet scam that takes your computer hostage with a supposed message from the FBI.
The scam is particularly troubling, because just when you think you're in the clear, the hackers can do some real damage.
Brandy Paulson relies heavily on access to the web to handle her family's personal business, so the message she got on her laptop from the FBI threatening to arrest her put her in a panic.
"So I was calling people saying, 'Hey, can you loan me some money, I got to pay this off so they don't come and pick us up'," Paulson said.
The FBI message - which is fake - accused Paulson of illegal activity on her laptop. It's really a virus called Reveton Ransomware, saying federal agents will freeze your computer until you cough up $200.
"It scared us, because in 72 hours, they are going to come and pick you up if you don't pay the $200," Paulson said.
But after doing some homework, Brandy used a computer terminal at the Anderson Library to show Eyewitness News the warning from the real FBI. The bureau started warning people about the Internet scam about a month ago. Even if you are a victim and have your computer cleaned, you may still be at risk. The virus may have already copied sensitive information about you from your computer.
"That's why we tell people not to give personal information out, so they can't penetrate bank accounts and steal your funds because they have your personal information," said FBI Asst. Special Agent In Charge Kevin Lyons.
With the FBI saying thousands of computers are getting hit with the virus, Paulson warns to do your homework before you respond to anyone online threatening your family for money.
"Read things online very carefully," she said.
If you're a victim of a computer scam, report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
