INDIANAPOLIS -

A new poll puts Democrat Joe Donnelly ahead of Republican Richard Mourdock for the first time in the race for Indiana's open US Senate seat.

Donnelly leads Mourdock 40 to 38 percent in the Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll, according to Howey Politics. The poll has a +/- 3.5-percent margin of error, making the Senate race a statistical dead heat.

The poll, which questioned 800 likely voters, shows Libertarian Senate candidate Andrew Horning with 7 percent.

According to the new numbers, President Obama isn't likely to win Indiana in the general election, as he did in 2008. Mitt Romney leads that race 52-40 percent.

Republican Mike Pence has a comfortable 47-34 percent lead over Democrat John Gregg, the survey found.
