WALKERTON -

Northern Indiana police say a homeowner digging a lake in his rural backyard uncovered the bones of an adult and an infant that likely date to the late 1800s or early 1900s.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mike Grzegorek tells the South Bend Tribune the man called police Tuesday evening after he found a human skull while digging the lake near Walkerton, about 20 miles southwest of South Bend.

The homeowner had previously found other bones in recent months while excavating the lake but had assumed they were from an animal.

A specialist in forensic anthropology identified the skull and other nearby bones as those of an adult and an infant likely more than a century old.

Grzegorek says the site appears to have been a burial site.
