Suit seeking to halt Evansville arena's demolition dismissed

EVANSVILLE -

A southwestern Indiana judge has dismissed a lawsuit that sought to prevent Evansville officials from demolishing a vacant arena and turning the site into a park.

Vanderburgh Superior Court Judge Richard D'Amour said in Tuesday's ruling that it would be against the public interest to stop the process of demolishing the 56-year-old Roberts Stadium.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports that Evansville businessman Alan Brill had sued to halt the building's demolition, saying he believed it could successfully be converted into an exposition center that would complement and not compete with the city's new downtown arena.

Roberts Stadium closed last fall with the opening of that new arena, the Ford Center. City officials hope to start the demolition of the old stadium later this year.
