California governor signs driverless cars bill

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA -

Are you ready to let your car do the driving?

Laws and regulations will have to change if driverless cars become the wave of the future. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Tuesday to take the next step to allow driverless cars in the state. The bill sets safety and performance regulations to test and operate autonomous vehicles on California's roads and highways. The bill was signed Tuesday at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Google has been developing so-called autonomous car technology and lobbying for the regulations.

The company says its fleet of a dozen computer-controlled vehicles has logged more than 300,000 miles of self-driving without an accident. Google's driverless vehicles are mostly Toyota Priuses equipped with the new self-driving technology.
