Indiana schools chief wants district accountability

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett says the accountability measures that have been introduced for individual schools should be extended to entire school districts.

The Indianapolis Star and the Journal Gazette report Bennett called for the district accountability and more flexibility in funding for education in his State of Education speech Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

Bennett says the school accountability measures have resulted in more students passing state exams, more graduating and more taking advanced coursework.

He says poor performance in schools often is systemic with problems rooted in leaders at the district level.

Bennett also says Indiana should look at funding of more early education programs such as preschool, but didn't call for more money for K-12 education.
