Indiana House battles pit underdogs against 'Gippers'

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana Democrats looking for a "Rudy"-like tale of underdog triumph in congressional battles this fall are more likely to find Republicans winning one or two for the "Gipper" instead.

Democratic candidate Brendan Mullen toured northern Indiana with "Rudy" star Sean Astin last week in support of his underdog candidacy against former state Rep. Jackie Walorski in the 2nd Congressional District.

Indiana political observer John Ketzenberger says new congressional districts drawn by Statehouse Republicans will likely prove too much for Democrats looking for wins.

Of the nine Indiana House battles, just two have drawn broad national attention: the 2nd District race centered around South Bend and a southwest Indiana battle between Republican U.S. Rep. Larry Buchshon and former Democratic state Rep. Dave Crooks.
