Indianapolis may lose daily Amtrak service to Chicago next year

LAFAYETTE -

Daily Amtrak service between Indianapolis and Chicago could be ending.

The federal government decided to cut funding for short routes beginning Oct.1, 2013. That means Amtrak would stop running "The Hoosier State" train which links Indianapolis and Chicago four days a week.

Amtrak tells Eyewitness News that it approached INDOT in June to see if it would take over funding for "The Hoosier State" train, but so far INDOT has not shown interest.

The Cardinal Train that travels from New York to Chicago through Indianapolis would still operate three days a week.
