Fundraiser aims to light up Broad Ripple

Tonight, a fundraiser aims to raise enough money to install more lights on side streets in an effort to make Broad Ripple a safer place to live and visit.

Residents have seen a recent spike in crime, and are taking matters into their own hands.

Eyewitness News has been covering the recent rise in home break-ins and burglaries. One resident who had $8,000 worth of electronics taken from his home during the day.

IMPD officers have stepped up their patrols in the area. Certain areas now have outdoor cameras which record motion-detected activity.

The Broad Ripple Village Association also started up a Neighborhood Crime watch program. Neighbors pledged to look out for each other, and be proactive in recognizing suspicious activity.

The fundraiser is tonight at Rock Lobster on Broad Ripple Avenue from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.  Tickets are $15 for general admission, and $25 for VIP.  The event features food, drinks, a silent auction and live DJ.

More than 2,400 people have signed a "keep Broad Ripple safe" online petition so far.
