INDIANAPOLIS -

Bettye Dobkins will be Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. (IDI)'s new director of safety and security.

Dobkins will lead IDI's efforts to develop and implement programs designed to make downtown safer, and she'll work with private and public sector partners. Examples of current and recent programs include the Downtown Security Partnership, Bike Patrol, Safety Notice Network and Street Order Task Force.

The director of safety and security is a new, full-time position for IDI.

According to IDI's 2012 survey, 71 percent of central Indiana residents feel that downtown is safe. That's up slightly from 69 percent in 2010.

Dobkins was formerly downtown district's deputy chief for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and most recently served as a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff's Department assigned to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

Dobkins is a graduate of Ball State University and lives in Indianapolis.
