Ashanti/Michael Phelps: trying to keep hope for kids alive

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Ashanti says having spent time in a Boys and Girls Club herself, she appreciates how they can help young people today. And she says she can see the excitement in the eyes of young people she mentors as an ambassador for the organization.

The singer spoke to a gathering of young people and reporters in Washington D.C. yesterday as she joined Denzel Washington and Michael Phelps in presenting a new plan to confront the challenges facing young people.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of America is aimed at turning around statistics that indicate that one in five American kids live in poverty, half of minority students won't graduate on time and that 30 percent of youngsters are obese or overweight.

Ashanti says when kids see where she has come from and where she has ended up, it motivates them to pursue their dreams, too.
