Denzel Washington: lending star power to Boys and Girls Club

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Denzel Washington says things would have probably turned out differently for him had it not been for there being a Boys and Girls club in his hometown of Mount Vernon, New York. So he says he's happy to lend his support - and name - to efforts to keep the clubs going.

He was on hand in Washington D.C. yesterday to help unveil a plan to deal with the challenges facing young people these days. Washington joined Olympic star Michael Phelps and Ashanti in calling for the nation to give more attention to improving education, relieving poverty and enhancing safety for the nation's young people.

Washington says he and other prominent people need to call on politicians to make the issues of children more of a focus during the presidential campaign.
