John Dillinger and Al Capone are among the criminals featured in an exhibit on northern Indiana crimes at South Bend's Center For History.
The center's director of school programs, Travis Childs, tells the South Bend Tribune the 1920s and '30s were an active time for crime in the city. He says Capone was known to frequent the area when the "heat" turned up in Chicago.
Dillinger's gang robbed South Bend's downtown Merchants Bank on June 30, 1934. The robbery resulted in a police officer being killed and others wounded. Dillinger was shot and killed by FBI agents in Chicago less than a month later.
The exhibit, open until Dec. 31, also explores the city's seedy side relating to Prohibition, illegal gambling operations and prostitution.
