Indiana funding cuts prompts youth home to slash budget

TERRE HAUTE -

State funding cuts combined with fewer residents have prompted a western Indiana youth home to make big cuts to its education budget.

Gibault Children's Services operates Holy Cross School at its juvenile residential treatment campus in Terre Haute. Interim executive director Michele Madley says funding cuts totaling $750,000 this year have impacted the entire campus.

Madley tells the Tribune-Star that Gibault has had to cut $350,000 from its education budget, which includes salaries and operational costs. She says Gibault has cut the school's teaching staff, cut the pay of some teachers and placed its assistant principal back into the classroom.

The school has gone from 10 to seven teachers and it also has a principal. Gibault currently has about 65 residents, although it can serve up to 120.
