INDIANAPOLIS -

An early morning garage fire spread to the home of an east side couple, sending a woman to the hospital with second degree burns.

Catherine Royalty, 61, told firefighters she thought she left the stove on, but after checking her kitchen, she looked outside and found the attached garage in the 2200 block of Brookside Parkway South Drive engulfed in fire.

She and her husband, Elvin, 63, left the home with their pet dog and called 911.

Firefighters needed 45 minutes to contain the blaze, which spread to the house.

Catherine Royalty was taken to Wishard Hospital with burns to her feet. Her husband was not hurt.

Damage is estimated at $75,000. The cause is under investigation.

Mr. and Mrs. Royalty had lived in the home for 38 years.
