University of Texas reopens after bomb threat

AUSTIN -

Two universities in Texas and North Dakota ordered evacuations Friday following threats.

The University of Texas says all university buildings have been cleared and are reopening after a bomb threat prompted an evacuation of the Austin campus.

The university posted on its website that all classes have been canceled for the remainder of the day Friday but other university activities will resume by 5 p.m.

The school had issued and alert shortly before 10 a.m. Friday telling people to immediately evacuate all campus buildings and "get as far away as possible" after the school received a phoned-in bomb threat.

University of Texas director of communications Rhonda Weldon says the university received a call about 8:35 a.m. from a man with a Middle Eastern accent claiming to be with al-Qaida. The man said he had placed bombs all over the campus that would go off in 90 minutes. Wheldon says all the buildings were evacuated at 9:50 a.m. as a precaution.

North Dakota State University in Fargo has also received a bomb threat and has ordered an evacuation. An emergency message sent out to students and posted on the university's website this morning ordered all students and employees to leave campus by 10:15 am.
