Residents fight to shut down Evansville Indiana mice breeder

Posted: Updated:
DARMSTADT -

People living near a rodent-breeding facility in a small town near Evansville are trying to get it permanently shut down.

The fight over The Mouse House started after nine current or former employees became ill from a form of meningitis that people can contract from the common house mouse. Business owner Dennis Bittner says he was told by state health officials advised him to kill and bury all his lab mice on the property and burn their bedding and food.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports neighbors complain the business doesn't belong in an agricultural zone and that the Vanderburgh County plan commission on Thursday voted against supporting a change to industrial zoning for the property.

The Darmstadt Town Council could vote on the issue in October.
