Smoky fire damages much of Fort Wayne church

FORT WAYNE -

A smoky fire in the basement of a Fort Wayne church damaged much of the building.

Firefighters were called about 1:30 a.m. Friday to the New Life Fellowship Church of God in a neighborhood just north of the city's downtown.

WANE-TV reports heavy smoke was coming from the basement and that firefighters had the fire under control within about 15 minutes. No one was believed inside the church and no injuries were reported.

Officials say fire damage was contained to the basement, although parts of the building also have smoke and water damage. The fire's cause wasn't immediately known.
