Walk aims to call attention to suicide risks

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is holding an "Out of the Darkness" community walk in Indianapolis on Saturday.

The walk that begins 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Celebration Plaza of the White River State Park is for those living with a depressive illness, those who have attempted suicide, those who have lost someone to suicide and families and friends that care for those individuals.

The walk also helps call attention to the Indiana State Suicide Prevention Plan. Dr. Joan Duwve, chief medical officer at the Indiana health department, says the plan recognizes that all Hoosiers can help prevent suicide deaths by understanding the risks for suicide, learning how to identify and respond to someone at risk and eliminating the barriers to receiving life-saving mental health services.
