IndyCar had good year but still has big challenges - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

This season was long ago earmarked as the pivotal year for IndyCar to begin the long climb back into relevance.

The series succeeded in some ways, and overcame the death of Dan Wheldon in last year's finale to produce an on-track product some believe is the best in racing.

There were seven different winners, competition all the way down the grid, and a first-time champion will be crowned in Saturday night in the finale at Auto Club Speedway.

But IndyCar still has major ailments and issues that threaten its long-term stability.

One of the biggest problems is the poor television ratings, and drivers blame NBC Sports for doing a lousy job of promoting the series.

And, the bickering between CEO Randy Bernard and team owners never seems to end.
