The embattled Indiana Department of Child Services will no longer be hiring its own attorneys for appellate court cases.
Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced Thursday that his office would begin handling appellate cases for the DCS. He says he made the decision after reviewing the issue since March, saying it would ensure such cases are consistent with the state's legal policy.
When DCS was created as a separate state agency by executive order in 2005, it was allowed to hire its own attorneys because it was best position to represent the interest of children in court cases. Zoeller says the agency can still hire its own attorneys for court cases, but his office will handle appellate cases because they are complex and can result in legal precedent.
