Device installed on New Whiteland trucks saving town's fuel dollars

At $4.00 a gallon, a local man has found a way to get what amounts to nearly a free gallon of gas with every fill-up. And he's trying to make sure you have a chance at getting the same savings.

"Everyone is trying to save money," says Wendell Johnson. He says he's the kind of guy that is always looking to save a dollar.

As superintendent for New Whiteland utilities, the more money he saves the town, the better. His department has 14 gasoline- and diesel-guzzling trucks that were eating up his budget.

"Every little penny counts, especially when you are a utility like this and a small town," said Johnson. "We try and save residents as much money as we can."

And he found a way to save money, increase gas mileage and cut down on maintenance, and it is saving the city hundreds of dollars every month.

Every vehicle owned by New Whiteland has a hydrogen generator installed. It's not the stuff of science fiction, but real science. The city paid $1,500 to outfit all their trucks, and they are seeing results after 8 months in service.

"I'm hoping that to see a real good savings by the time we are done. I think these HFX4 boxes will pay for themselves within two years," says Johnson.

Mark Berry sold the city on the idea, but he is not a salesman. "Basically what we are doing is putting a small amount of hydrogen in with the air fuel mixture, and it completely burns the mixture out of the cylinder, nothing left over," says Berry.

By adding hydrogen, all the fuel is burned, improving performance and lowering the amount of gas used. Berry hand-made all of the devices and is working with a company to start mass production.

"They may not like this, probably the gas stations wouldn't like this, because you save people gas," said Berry. "Somebody is going say 'hey, what's that all about'."

He's the research & development guy for the company. His lab is a diesel-powered 1977 VW Rabbit with 491,000 miles on it. Berry has driven every one of those miles, with the exception of the three miles that were on the odometer when he bought the car new in '77. He says he gets an extra ten miles per gallon with the device.
