Mom: Daycare center staff forgot my daughter - 13 WTHR Indianapolis

As Nayvia took a peaceful nap on the couch Wednesday, her mother said she hasn't slept well at all.

"I thought that somebody came into the day care and took her," said Kenya Miles.

Miles takes two-year-old Nayvia to Indigo Kids Day Care on Anderson's west side. It's one of the few places open late, and Kenya works until about 11 p.m.

It happened like this: Kenya takes her daughter to one of the centers, then picks her up at another. The daycare shuttles the late pickup kids around, but when Kenya went to the pickup point late Monday night, her daughter was not there.

"I believe my baby fell asleep and they forgot all about her," said Miles 

If someone forgot to move Nayvia from the drop-off house, the child could have spent up to five hours alone, mom fears. "She was she just crying all day. Anything could have happened to her. There could have been a fire. She could have choked on something. Somebody could have broke in."

When she discovered Nayvia missing, Kenya called police. As officers interviewed witnesses, the daycare van showed up with Nayvia aboard.

"She had a t-shirt on and a diaper, but her legs were soiled," said Anderson Police detective Joel Sandefur. The child was covered with her own waste.

The daycare didn't answer our questions when we stopped at one center Wednesday.

Police say management claims Nayvia was supervised at a third day care site, where a woman named Patricia Reese lives.

Reese told us the daycare asked her to say she had Nayvia with her all night, but Reese told us "I didn't have her at all." Reese says she's hurt that this has happened.

Kenya Miles thinks the daycare should be prosecuted for leaving her daughter behind. No charges have been filed. Police are investigating.

"Anything could have happened," said Miles. "It would have turned out worse then it turned out to be."
