Foul odor investigated on Indianapolis west side

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Investigators are trying to figure out what is causing a strong odor in Pike Township. Residents on the city's far west side woke up Wednesday morning to what they describe as the smell of natural gas. (Natural gas has no odor, but utilities add a small amount of odorant to assist in detecting leaks. The odor has been compared to the smell of rotten eggs.)

Officials from the Pike Township Fire Department said they had received multiple complaints from concerned residents, and the smell was reported in an area from 38th Street north to 62nd Street and from Georgetown Road to Dandy Trail.

A spokeswoman from Citizens Energy Group said the utility company is currently investigating to determine the cause.

"We are aware of the smell but haven't found a gas leak," Citizens Energy Group media relations coordinator Sarah Holsapple told 13 Investigates. "We've run several tests this morning and will continue to monitor the situation. We've also been talking to surrounding businesses to see if they've had any issues that would have resulted in an odor in the air."
