Tom Hanks says if it weren't for Michael Clarke Duncan's mom, he never would have been able to star in "The Green Mile" with the actor.

Hanks says when Duncan was a teen in Chicago, he decided to join a gang. That news didn't go over well with his mom. Hanks says she whacked him upside the head with a frying pan - even while a sizzling pork chop was still inside. The message was clear: get out of that gang.

Hanks says Duncan listened to his mom - and quit the gang. It was just one of several stories told about Duncan at his memorial service in Los Angeles yesterday.

Hanks also says he used to tease 6-foot-5, 300 pound actor with the deep voice about his handwriting. Hanks says it was so large and loopy, it looked like that of a "12-year-old girl who loves horses."

Others who took part in the memorial were Jay Leno, Holly Robinson Peete, Loretta Devine and Stevie Wonder.

Duncan died September 3 from a heart attack he suffered in July. He was 54.
