LANSING, Ill. -

An Indiana pilot died when his homemade gyrocopter crashed after takeoff at the Lansing Municipal Airport in south suburban Chicago.

Illinois State Police and the Lake County Coroner's office in Indiana say the man died Monday afternoon from his injuries. Master Sgt. Jason LoCoco of the Illinois State Police says the man was the only occupant of the aircraft. The gyrocopter was found in a field near the airport. Authorities say the pilot was taken to a hospital in nearby Munster, Ind., where he died.

The pilot was not immediately identified pending notification of family.

Illinois State Police say they expect the National Transportation Safety Board or the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate the crash.
