Grenades found in Anderson park ruled nonlethal

Posted: Updated:
ANDERSON -

Police say five grenades found by children in a central Indiana city park were nonlethal training devices.

Anderson police Detective Joel Sandefur says the grenades could have had a firecracker-like explosion if they had been activated.

The devices were found Sunday afternoon close to the White River in Athletic Park near downtown Anderson and removed by a police bomb squad.

Sandefur tells The Herald Bulletin that the grenades appeared to be old but that investigators didn't know their source or how they ended up in the park.
