Mariah Carey: honored at BMI Urban Music Awards

Posted: Updated:
BEVERLY HILLS -

Everybody knows that Mariah Carey is a great singer. But she says what makes her most recent honor so special - is that it comes for her songwriting - not her singing.

She was the guest of honor at the BMI Urban Music Awards - where she received the Icon Award for her songwriting skills. Over her career, she has racked up 18 number-one singles and more than 200 million albums sold.

Carey says she's "so humbled" by the award - because, "a lot of people still don't know I write my own songs."

Among the singers who paid tribute to Carey by performing her songs were Fantasia and Eric Benet. Benet performed "One Sweet Day" and Fantasia did "Hero" during the private ceremony at a theater in Beverly Hills, California this past Friday.
