Family loses everything in house fire

INDIANAPOLIS -

Seven people escaped an apartment fire on the city's south side. It took place at about 5:00 this morning at the 2800 block of Shelby Street.

Dawn Hardcastle told firefighters that the fire started in her family's apartment but she has no idea why. Her husband Gary awoke to heavy smoke and orange flames rolling across the ceiling of their bedroom.

The fire was coming from the bedroom where their 13-year-old son slept.

Gary yelled for everyone to leave and was able to alert people in the other two units. The family escaped with their two dogs, but they were not able to find their cat.

The family has no insurance and lost everything they own. The other two units were not damaged.
