CARMEL -
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy seem to be spending a lot of time together these days. That included the top of the leaderboard Thursday in the BMW Championship.
McIlroy was dialed in with his irons and birdied his last two holes for an 8-under 64 that got him into a four-way tie for the lead at Crooked Stick. Woods made a 30-foot birdie putt on his last hole and was one shot behind with a 65. They both made it look easy, and Crooked Stick was every bit of that because of heavy rains earlier in the week.
"I'm just gonna try to get a 'W' this week. That's the goal. That's why I'm here," said Woods. "That's why I entered. This is a different format than how I've played the FedEx Cup. I didn't play last year; wasn't even in the damn thing. So it's nice to be here and be able to contend in this thing," said Woods, speaking earlier in the day.
"The golf course is very soft; it's long; thick rough. Obviously they've had a lot of rain here over the last few weeks so it's gonna be an advantage to hit the ball long and hit it in the fairway, so hopefully that's something I can continue to do. I feel like I'm driving the ball pretty well," said McIlroy, who was -5 at 11 holes.
Indiana native Bo Van Pelt, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Graham DeLaet of Canada also were at 64. Crooked Stick was so vulnerable that all but five holes played under par.
Thursday was a steamy day at Crooked Stick Golf Club for the first round of the BMW Championship.
Some low scores are expected this weekend, and after the recent rain, the course is set up nicely for players to tear it up.
Van Pelt isn't the only player from Indiana that Eyewitness Sports is following at the tournament. The other Indiana player in the tournament is Jeff Overton of Evansville. Overton is an Indiana University graduate who still lives in Bloomington.

Because of the soft fairways, players are allowed to pick up the ball and clean it if it lands in the fairway. The ball must be replaced within six inches of where it landed.
The best chance for an autograph is before players start their rounds or as they wrap up.
