Vectren to purge gas main in Fishers

Posted: Updated:
FISHERS -

Don't be alarmed if you notice the smell of natural gas near 131st Street and Promise Road in Fishers Thursday.

Vectren will be performing maintenance on a 20-inch gas line at around 1:30 pm in the area just north of that intersection.

Vectren says this will create a loud noise and an odor downwind, possibly as far east as Marilyn Road.

Where the odor goes will depend on wind speed and direction. Natural gas is lighter than air, and dissipates into the atmosphere as it leaves the area. Any prevailing winds will help to dissipate the gas more quickly. The odorant in natural gas is not flammable or toxic, but tends to travel farther than the gas itself.

The purge is expected to last for an hour. Vectren will be in contact with the Fishers Fire Department.

Vectren does not believe the maintenance poses any risk to residents. The company will be monitoring gas levels in the area.
