Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong was in an Italian hospital Sunday but promises to be ready to perform on tonight's MTV Video Music Awards.

Armstrong was hospitalized in Bologna with an undisclosed illness.

Stars who arrive at the VMAs will walk a three-level red carpet inspired by a multi-tiered driving range in Japan. MTV says 12 performers will spend at least some time floating above the stage during their performances, more than will actually perform on the stage.

The show will start at 8 PM Eastern time instead of the usual 9 PM to avoid conflicting with President Barack Obama accepting the Democratic nomination after 10 PM Eastern.
