CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
Indiana's Democratic candidate for governor, John Gregg, has joined dozens of Indiana delegates at the Democratic National Convention.
With less than nine weeks until Election Day, he's trying to close the gap he's facing in the polls.
"Our challenge is to get people to look beyond the party labels," Gregg said.
That is why the former Speaker of the House wants to reach out to moderate Republicans.
"They realize what happened to (former Senator Richard) Lugar. Mike Pence did not come to Lugar's aid. He had a joint event with Mourdock and I think they realize they are 'Tweedle' and 'Deedle'," Gregg said.
And he has some help.
Former Governor and U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, who introduced Gregg Wednesday morning, is well aware of Indiana's Republican leanings, but he overcame them and he believes Gregg can, as well.
"If it's a race between John Gregg and Mike Pence, then John Gregg should have a decent chance of winning that race. If it's about other things, the national race, ideology, then it's a more difficult road," Bayh said.
"Address the Lugar Republican, who doesn't identify with the Tea Party, who doesn't believe everything is a battle between the left and the right," Gregg said.
