Nonprofit groups urge lawmakers not to kill plates

INDIANAPOLIS -

Organizers from nonprofit groups told Indiana lawmakers the state has a legitimate role in the sale of specialty license plates that raise much of their funding.

A legislative study committee heard testimony Wednesday on whether the state should continue in the business of providing license plates that tout everything from state universities to the Patriot Guard.

The issue surfaced last year when conservative lawmakers tried to eliminate specialty plates for a gay youth group. Their push failed, but the Bureau of Motor Vehicles later stripped the plates from that group and two others.

Plate supporters urged lawmakers Wednesday not to kill the program, but said they're open to stricter standards.

Committee members generally seemed to support tighter regulation of the specialty license plate program.
