INDIANAPOLIS -
And so it is Bill Clinton's turn. He casts a long shadow of presidential politics. He is also one the greatest political strategists alive. No one understands the politics behind what it takes to get to the White House better than Bill Clinton, but this time he may have finally met his match.
When he was first elected president, he campaigned on a simple slogan, "It's the economy, stupid." Well, it still is the economy, stupid, but now the shoe is on the other foot. When Clinton espoused that phrase he was the challenger. In other words - he was Mitt Romney. George Bush 41 was the incumbent, or, for sake of this argument, Barack Obama.
Wednesday night Clinton will try to tell the country why it should stay with the incumbent president when the economy is sputtering. This promises to be good. Now after all these years, Bush 41 will be able to see what he should have done to win a second term.
Will America buy it? That is the question of the day and the question of this election, but if anyone can answer it Bill Clinton can. This is going to be good.
