CARMEL -
World class golf returns to Central Indiana this week as the BMW Championship gets underway at Crooked Stick Golf Club. Some of the best golfers in the world will be practicing today, getting ready for first round action on Thursday.
Although Isaac's remnants have moved out of the area, the weather is having some impact on this event.
The player list includes Rory McIlroy, Nick Watney and Tiger Woods. Organizers don't want them to be playing on a muddy mess, and they don't want spectators to have to deal with it either.
The course has probably some of the greenest grass in Indiana, and the recent rain has helped, but it's been just a little too much. Things did dry out a bit Monday and that should help with practice Tuesday.
About 125,000 spectators are expected to visit Carmel and Indianapolis through next weekend. But they had to cancel everything Monday due to a soaked golf course. Tuesday, practice is "on" - at least for now. Gates open at 7 a.m.
At 8, you'll be able to see golfers practice. This is the third of four events leading up to the FedExCup, with some serious prize money at stake - a total of $8-million, with the winner's take $1.5-million.
Organizers hope the weather will hold out. A little bit of rain will not stop events, but a repeat of the serious amounts we've seen the last few days could stop the activities.
"The golf course can certainly take the rain. It needs the rain after the summer," said Vince Pellegrino of the Western Golf Association. "But certainly, if I had my way, we wouldn't want any rain, obviously. But the heavy downpours is what we really want to stay away from."
Tickets to watch practice are $20 dollars. All-day tournament tickets are $75. The Pro-Am is Wednesday before Thursday's first round of the BMW Championship starts.
