Emails reflect promoters' concern over Michael Jackson's health

LOS ANGELES -

When he was on stage, Michael Jackson seemed to be an endless bundle of energy and self-confidence. But the promoters of the pop star's ill-fated comeback tour indicate they saw a different side of Jackson as he got ready for the shows.

Emails from AEG officials describe concern about Jackson's physical and emotional stability, saying he was out of shape and full of self-doubt. The emails were obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

In one email exchange, AEG's Randy Phillips describes Jackson as "an emotionally paralyzed mess." That email was sent just before a London news conference announcing the concerts.

Jackson was described as "locked in his room, drunk and despondent" - and needed help getting dressed before addressing the media. The LA Times reports the messages will probably play a key role in two lawsuits set for trial next year.

In one suit, the shows' insurers are asking a judge to nullify a $17.5-million policy that they say AEG got with false claims about Jackson's health and ability to perform. In the other, Jackson's heirs have filed a wrongful-death suit that accuses AEG of pressuring Jackson to go on with a comeback, despite indications he was too weak.

Lawyers for AEG have denied any wrongdoing.
