CARMEL -
In just a matter of days, the golf course built as an escape from crowds will be crowded.
"Tiger is going to be here, Phil Mickelson is going to be here, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Justin Rose our defending champion last year, all of our top players in the game are going to be here," said Vince Pellegrino of the Western Golf Association.
Before they get here, there is still a lot of work to be completed. As the sky threatened rain this morning, an army of workers scrambled to cover the turf and open spaces with hospitality tents and grandstands for the expected 150,000 fans coming to Crooked Stick Golf Club this week.
Last minute preparations go beyond mowing the tees and greens. "We're already being proactive with our parking situation," said Pellegrino.
It is hard to believe that rain is actually causing a problem, considering the historic lack of rain here this summer, but organizers have had to move parking from 116th and Hoover Road to a location down the street.
"The grass parking lots, we want to save them for the rest of the week," Pellegrino said.
The same goes for preserving the condition of course for the actual tournament. The rain has already forced organizers to postpone or cancel some of the first events of the week, like the celebrity shootout on Monday.
