MARION, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say police in Muncie shot and killed a man armed with a sawed-off shotgun after he robbed a discount store.

State police are investigating the shooting that happened about 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the northeastern Indiana city.

Authorities say officers surrounded the Dollar General Store after police received a 911 call. The suspect reportedly exited the back of the store as officers entered the front, and fired at officers who were waiting behind the store. Police say two officers returned fire, striking the man several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner identified the suspect as 61-year-old Robert Lee Thompson of Marion.

No police officers or store employees were injured.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
